It is difficult to put a value on Yoenis Cespedes

The Mets acquired Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers on July 31, after which he hit .287 with a .337 OBP, 17 HR and 44 RBI in 57 regular season games.

In early September, in a poll on MetsBlog, 82 percent of roughly 14,000 voters on MetsBlog said Cespedes was worth a deal of more than five years, with 43 percent saying he was worth at least a six-year deal.

However, in the postseason, he hit just .222, made multiple errors in the outfield, hit just two home runs, and left the final game of the World Series with a leg injury.

Last week, in a poll on MetsBlog, just 8 percent of voters said Cespedes was worth at least a six-year deal, while less than 50 percent felt he is worth committing to for at least five years.

I keep hearing MLB insiders saying Cespedes is only worth a three- or four-year deal, yet they all expect him to eventually get five or six at around $20 or so million a season. This is a big gap, which I can’t really explain, though it is sort of on display in the above polls. And, I think that speaks to what he’s all about, which is a hot or cold player with a ton of talent, but also some flaws in his game that can creep up at the worst time. He’s hard to value, because he can totally be that elite guy, but then he gets picked off first base during a key moment of the World Series. In either case, I expect the Mets to talk with him, but I still see it is very unlikely they re-sign him, despite him repeatedly saying he would like to return in 2016.
