Juan Lagares will see a doctor about his right elbow, but he is not expected to have surgery, just like last offseason, Terry Collins told reporters at Citi Field on Wednesday (Nov. 4, 2015).
Lagares had a breakout season in 2014, hitting .281, winning a Gold Glove and signing a four-year contract extension. However, he played all of 2015 he struggled at the plate and in the field, while battling the same sore elbow that ended his season early the year before, Collins said in September.
According to Collins, the only way the elbow will improve is rest or have Tommy John surgery.
Thankfully, unlike pitchers, position players like Lagares can play through the injury.
“We just have to be careful he doesn’t get crazy and make an awkward throw or try to overthrow too much,” Collins added.

It’s the same process with pitchers. So, I assume Lagares is going for a check up after a season of throwing and hitting to see what is going on his elbow now compared to one year ago. And, on the basis of that comparison, they’ll decide if he should have surgery. But, in all likelihood, it’s something they’ll say he can play through. I think I heard that if Lagares had TJ surgery, he could expect to be out for six to nine months, which get him back to the Mets early summer.
