Juan Lagares will not need surgery this offseason on his right elbow, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN.
Manger Terry Collins told reporters at Citi Field on Wednesday that Lagares was going to be meeting with doctors and that surgery was unlikely to be required (Nov. 4, 2015).
Lagares had a breakout season in 2014, hitting .281, winning a Gold Glove and signing a four-year contract extension. However, he struggled in 2015 at the plate and in the field, while battling the same sore elbow that ended his season early the year before, Collins said in September.
According to Collins, the only way the elbow will improve is rest or have Tommy John surgery.
Thankfully, unlike pitchers, position players like Lagares can play through the injury.
“We just have to be careful he doesn’t get crazy and make an awkward throw or try to overthrow too much,” Collins added.
