Mets add LHP Josh Smoker to 40-man roster

The Mets have added Double-A LHP Josh Smoker to their 40-man roster.

Smoker, 26, had a 3.12 ERA in 49 combined innings in Single- and Double-A.

Smoker was the 31st overall pick by the Nationals in the 2007, but injuries kicked him to the independent league. However, while there, a freelance scout saw him and informed the Mets, who worked him out in Port St. Lucie this past spring. The Mets signed him, knowing he’d already had shoulder surgery to repair himself, and he’s now hitting 98 mph with his fastball… as a lefty. He’s intriguing. Plus, you’ve got to love his name… He and Rafael Montero will be important names to know next spring training, since I think they’ll both be factors in the bullpen at some point next season.
