The GM Meetings started just a few hours ago, yet the Mets have already heard requests from interested teams about whether they plan to trade a young pitcher, Mets assistant GM John Ricco told reporters Monday (Nov. 9, 2015).
Last week, when asked if he might consider dealing Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz, GM Sandy Alderson said, “I can’t see it happening.”
Alderson wouldn’t flat-out dismiss the idea, but said it was very unlikely to happen.
“If you start talking about trading one of our starting pitchers, you have to be careful about weakening the team,” he said. “We’re fairly resolute about what we’re going to do and not do with regard to those four, but we’ll see what happens.”
Alderson reportedly came close to trading Zack Wheeler with Wilmer Flores this past summer in a deal for Carlos Gomez. Wheeler is expected to return from Tommy John surgery next July. The Mets also reportedly discussed Wheeler in a deal with the Reds for Jay Bruce. In the end, they kept Wheeler and dealt top pitching prospect Michael Fulmer to the Tigers for Yoenis Cespedes.

Nov. 6. 2015: The Mets finally got a look at what this rotation is capable of, and it worked. So, to his point, it’s hard to imagine them breaking it up unless it’s for an obvious, can’t-miss upgrade. And, presently, I don’t think that type of deal is available. Instead, I think they keep the Fab Four. Wheeler, however, is a different story. He isn’t due back until the second half of the season, they’ve already won without him, they’ve already tried to trade him during his rehab, and he doesn’t exactly fit in to their model of striking out guys out and keeping them off the bases. So, it stands to reason they’d certainly consider dealing him again.
