The Mets have no plan to deal Travis d’Arnaud or Kevin Plawecki, assistant GM John Ricco told reporters on Tuesday.
“Catching, we’ve said many times, is a position we can’t have enough depth,” Ricco explained, according to ESPN.com (Nov. 10). “We have two guys we think are frontline catchers. I think there’s ways for us, especially in the short-term, to make use of both of them. … They’re both going to help us win.”
Ricco said it’s possible one of the two players could get time at a different position, but they will both continue to primarily serve as catchers for the Mets next season.
“Kevin is still learning and developing, and Travis still has yet to show that he can be a healthy guy for a full year,” Ricco added. “We talk amongst ourselves about different thoughts and throw things out there, but nothing formal has been discussed.”
The Braves and Rangers are among teams looking to upgrade at catcher, according to NY Post reporter Joel Sherman (Nov. 10).
D’Arnaud missed 95 games due to varying injuries in 2015, during which he hit .268 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs in 239 at-bats. Meanwhile, Plawecki hit .219 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 73 games, while striking out in 23 percent of his at-bats.
