Mets have no set plan to use d’Arnaud and Plawecki at other positions

There are no immediate plans to have Travis d’Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki learn new positions, although it’s possible it could be explored in spring training, Terry Collins told reporters Wednesday.

“We’ll see how that sorts out over the course of the offseason, but I don’t think we’re anxious to run either one of them out of that catching position,” GM Sandy Alderson added.

D’Arnaud missed 95 games due to varying injuries in 2015, during which he hit .268 with 12 HR and 41 RBI in 239 at bats. Meanwhile, Plawecki hit .219 with 3 HR and 21 RBI in 73 games, while striking out in 23% of his at bats.

“If there’s any way to help the team, I’ll play wherever they want me,” Plawecki told SNY.TV’s Rob Brender in 2014 (Nov. 14, 2014).

I’ve heard the Mets discussed this last summer, but never pushed it. There was never an immediate need. Plawecki worked out at first base a bit in the minors, but it’s hard to imagine him ever getting time there over Lucas Duda or Michael Cuddyer. D’Arnaud would be starting from scratch. So, my guess is at some point in spring training we’ll see each grab a glove and do light work at different spots in the field to see how they feel. But, I don’t think it will be a priority and it’ll probably be forgotten about by April. It seems d’Arnaud will always be battling aches and pains, so having a back-up like Plawecki, who will be ready to play regularly for long stretches of time, will be an asset. So, I wouldn’t spend too much having him focus on other positions, since at any moment he could end up the starting catcher.
