Mets will target Span, Parra and Fowler

In an effort to acquire a new outfielder, the Mets will target free-agent outfielders Denard SpanGerardo Parra and Dexter Fowler, according to Newsday’s Marc Carig (Nov. 7, 2015).

Span, 31, hit .301 with five HR and 22 RBI in 61 games with the Nationals last season. He battled back and hip injuries through most of the season, then had season-ending surgery on a torn labrum in September.

Parra, 28, hit .291 with 14 HR and 51 RBI in 155 games. The Mets reportedly had talks with the Brewers about acquiring him in trade during July, before he was eventually dealt to the Orioles.

Fowler, 29, hit .250 with 17 HR, 46 RBIs and 20 stolen bases last season for the Cubs. In eight big-league seasons, he’s a career .267 hitter with a .363 OBP and at least 10 stolen bases every season.

This makes sense, since the Mets desperately need someone able to play all three outfield position, who is affordable, has experience, can work counts and give them some speed.

Fowler will likely get the biggest contract. I can see him getting four years, maybe five, and at least $10 million a season. However, he is not great against right-handed pitching. So, if the Mets are looking for someone to platoon with Juan Lagares, Span is probably the better fit. I bet he ends up with a three-year deal, probably around $10 million a season. Plus, he can be the quick, consistent, leadoff hitter they’ve been missing since Jose Reyes left after 2011. Parra is the least expensive option, but I still see him more like a fourth outfielder, especially given how poor he played down the stretch.
