Rockies are considering whether to sign Daniel Murphy

The Rockies have discussed whether to sign free-agent infielder Daniel Murphy, who they would use at to play first base, according to FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal (Nov. 7. 2015).

Murphy, 31, is a career .313 hitters with an .812 OPS in games played at Coors Field.

Last Friday, the Mets made a one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer to Murphy, who must decide whether to accept or decline. The offer allows the Mets to receive draft pick compensation should he sign with another organization.

“I like it here, and I’d like to come back,” Murphy said at the end of the season, when asked about returning to the Mets. “I feel blessed to have been a Met this long.”

Murphy, who was drafted by the Mets as a 13th-round pick out in 2006, earned $8 million this past season, which was his final year of arbitration. The New York Post’s Joel Sherman talked to leagues sources in October who said Murphy could end up being offered a four-year deal worth around $50 million (Oct. 19, 2015).

I’m growing more and more convinced Murphy will not be on the Mets, especially if he’s going to be offered a three- or four-year deal from another team. I’ll be OK with this, so long as Sandy Alderson replaces Murphy’s bat and upgrades the infield defense at the same time. As for Murphy in Colorado, it would be a nice landing spot for him. Murphy’s swing and ability to make consistent contact could end up winning him a batting title. Plus, he’s always best at first or third base, since he makes less mistakes when he has to react quickly instead of having time to think about what to do with the ball.
