Terry Collins, his coaches, Sandy Alderson and his staff all met earlier this week Citi Field to review the 2015 season, from what I can gather. The group discussed what worked, what didn’t, and where they need to improve to get back to the World Series next season.
The GM Meetings will take place in Boca Raton, Florida, next week, Nov. 9 through Nov. 12. Typically, during the day, the group will spend more time discussing business issues about the game. In addition to conferences and meetings about league issues, the GM Meetings are used for teams to meet, talk about agendas, player values, offseason plans and learn who wants who and who may be available. So, buckle up, as we’re about to get hit with a lot of random trade rumors, which can be exciting and tedious.
In the past, November was used for research, with deals happening during or after the Winter Meetings in early December. However, the last two years, a bevy of activity went down during November, not long after the GM Meetings. I have a feeling we may see the same, especially in trades, as teams look to this market before having to overspend on free agents.
I’ve tried, but still have no real sense of what the Mets plan to do this winter. Of course, they’ve only been at it for a few days. So, my bet is they use next week to pick up ideas, gauge the market and then start working on a more defined list of priorities. I’ve heard some people say they’ll be quiet, aiming to sign only bench players and bullpen guys. But, I’ve heard others around baseball predict Alderson will put his foot on the gas, making trades to free up money and look to acquire an every-day, 150-game shortstop. And, of course, I expect we’ll eventually hear rumors connecting them to Dexter Fowler, Denard Span and Ben Zobrist, among others. The point is that it’s early and I’m not sure even the Mets, let alone other people, know what they want to do. That’s what next will be about…
