The Mets’ top three starters in Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard each threw a career-high for innings in 2015.
Harvey, in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, threw 216 innings including the postseason, more than what his agent Scott Boras and doctors recommended he throw (180) to preserve his arm.
“I wasn’t going to let the innings limit or the tempo of how the season’s been played out with all of that stuff get in the way,” Harvey said about pitching into the ninth inning of Game 5 of the World Series. “For me, it was easy to go back out there inning after inning.”
Boras told the New York Post he will look at Harvey’s innings in 2016, but will be less cautious moving forward if he pitches through 2016 without issue (Nov. 4).
“We’re staying on him until you get past that two-year window,” Boras said. “With Tommy John surgery, once you get past that second season, you’re feeling pretty good.”
DeGrom threw 214 innings in 2015 after throwing 178 2/3 innings in 2014, and Syndergaard went from 133 innings in 2014 to 208 2/3 innings in 2015.
“This is going to be a short offseason for a lot of them,” manager Terry Collins said. “They pitched more innings than they ever have. So my concern is what they’re going to be like when they show up at spring training. When are those arms going to bounce back? But those are all things we’ll find out as the future comes. I tell you one thing, they learned one thing: They learned how to get through this. They learned how to get through a long season. They learned what it’s like to play in October, and they’re going to be a lot better because of this experience.”
