Will Piazza make the Hall of Fame in 2016?

Mike Piazza returns to the Hall of Fame ballot in 2016 for the fourth time looking to be voted into Cooperstown.

Players need to receive 75 percent of the Baseball Writers Association of America’s vote in order to be voted into the Hall of Fame. Piazza appeared on 69.9 percent of the ballot in 2015.

The BBWAA recently reduced the number of eligible voters from 549 to 475, which, according to ESPN’s Adam Rubin, could eliminate older voters who may have been taking a hard-line position against Piazza’s era of players (Nov. 9, 2015).

Piazza hit 427 home runs, 1,335 RBIs and had a .308 batting average in his 16-year career, leading the Mets to the 2000 World Series.

Players may appear on the ballot for a maximum of 10 years before they are removed.

Jeff Bagwell (55.7 percent in 2015), Tim Raines (55 percent), Roger Clemens (37.5 percent), Barry Bonds (36.8 percent) and Mike Mussina (24.6 percent) are among the 17 players who return to the ballot again. Alan Trammel and Mark McGwire are in their final year of the ballot.

There are 15 new players joining the ballot this year, including Ken Griffey Jr., who hit 630 home runs in his 22-year career, and Trevor Hoffman, who recorded 601 saves.
