Lagares will not have surgery, may be more aggressive in field next season

Mets OF Juan Lagares will not have offseason surgery on his elbow, Mets assistant GM John Ricco told reporters in Florida on Monday (Nov. 9, 2015).

“Again, there hasn’t really been a change in a long time in it, so the recommendation is not to have surgery,” Ricco explained.

Lagares was examined by doctors last week, Terry Collins recently told reporters (Nov. 4, 2015).

Lagares had a breakout season in 2014, hitting .281, winning a Gold Glove and signing a four-year contract extension. However, he struggled at the plate and in the field during 2015, while battling the same sore elbow that ended his season early the year before, Collins said in September.

“I know Terry has said throughout the year that maybe we needed to be a little more aggressive with him in spring training in terms of a throwing program, as opposed to this year when we kind of backed off him and didn’t have him throw as much,” Ricco said. “We’re going to talk to the doctors and the trainers and figure it out.”
