Mejia could return in 2016

The Mets are monitoring Jenrry Mejia’s performance in the Dominican Winter League and considering bringing him back once his suspension is up, according to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman (Nov. 10).

Mejia, 26, is serving his second suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. His suspension will end around July 26, according to Sherman, and is not on the Mets’ 40-man roster while he is suspended.

However, he is eligible to pitch in winter leagues. As a starting pitcher for Licey, he has a 5.40 ERA in four starts. In 16 2/3 innings, he has given up 26 hits and struck out nine batters.

Mejia, according to Sherman, would be in line to earn approximately $1.1 million if the Mets brought him back next season.

In seven appearances last year, he pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings. He recorded 28 saves with a 3.65 ERA in 63 appearances in 2014.

If Mejia is caught using performance-enhancing drugs for a third time, he would be subject to a lifetime ban. He was suspended 80 games for a first-time offense last March and 162 games last July.
