Should the Mets trade a young starting pitcher?

It makes more sense to trade Matt Harvey a year from now rather than this winter, four out of five of scouts and executives told Daily News reporter John Harper (Nov. 11).

“In my experience, his value wouldn’t be that much greater three years from free agency rather than two,” a current GM told Harper. “In this case, his value could be even higher next year, after a second year back from Tommy John. But, if you want to maximize the return on him, you do need to make a decision at that time.”

According to Harper, the Mets could realistically expect to get back one of, say, Xander Bogaerts or Mookie Betts, for Harvey, both not both, in a deal this winter with the Red Sox.

The Mets have already started being asked if they’re willing to deal a young starting pitcher, as they look to upgrade their offense, Mets assistant GM John Ricco told reporters (Nov. 9).

However, last week, when asked if he might consider dealing Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard or Steven Matz, GM Sandy Alderson said, “I can’t see it happening.”

Alderson wouldn’t flat-out dismiss the idea, but said it was very unlikely to happen.

“If you start talking about trading one of our starting pitchers, you have to be careful about weakening the team,” he said. “We’re fairly resolute about what we’re going to do and not do with regard to those four, but we’ll see what happens.”

I’d call the Red Sox, because that’s tempting. But, at the end of the day, I don’t think I’d have the stomach to make that one-for-one deal. Again, it’s worth exploring because you never know what might transpire. But it would probably take more than one of those two position players to break up this pitching staff, and I don’t think the Red Sox would be interested at that point. The Mets finally got a look at what this rotation is capable of, and it worked. So, to Alderson’s point, it’s hard to imagine them ruining that unless it’s for an obvious, can’t-miss upgrade and, then, you need the guts to make the move. I just can’t see it happening this winter. Next year? Maybe. Right now, I don’t think so…
