5 Signs It Might Be Time To Replace Your Carpet

We eventually need to change them, as carpet is not made to last a lifetime. Below are 5 common signs that we might need to replace our carpet.

Stains

Are you covering up carpet stains with furniture and rugs when carpet cleaning fails to remove them? If your house is starting to resemble a minefield, it’s time for a carpet replacement. Most carpets come with a stain-resistant finish, but over time, the treatment fades and eventually leaves the carpet unprotected. Stains caused by pet urine, feces, vomit, mold and mildew are usually easy to clean if you act fast. But these biological substances eventually will absorb into the carpet padding, leading to mold and mildew buildup under the carpet. If the biological stains are in several places, consider replacing the carpet to avoid health hazards with mold. Leffel says they sometimes get creative with replacing small pieces of stained carpet by removing carpet from a rarely used closet. Matted Down

One of the first signs of carpet death is when the pile starts to mat down in the main walkways. If your carpet is made of PET Polyester or Polyester and is matting down then it’s likely that your carpet is on its way out. Polyester fibers are well known for matting down and crushing because they are not very resilient. Once the tuft falls over and lays down it won’t ever return to its original upright position. In this situation having your carpet professionally cleaned will likely not give your carpet any renewed life. Source: AlanJohn

Mold

Carpeting in your basement is more susceptible to mold than other areas of the home. Damp conditions create an environment where mold can thrive — which means if your home is flooded, or your carpets experience standing water for any reason, mold is likely to follow.  Once mold has infested your carpets, they need to be removed immediately. A musty smell and/or a flare-up of your allergies are warning signs that your carpet might be moldy. You can purchase a mold testing kit to help determine if there are high levels of mold in your home. Source: Hoover

Allergy Symptoms

Have you noticed an uptick in your allergy symptoms recently? Surprisingly, your old carpet may be to blame. As time goes on and your carpet’s fibers age, it becomes more and more likely that your carpet could house dust and allergens Source: FloorCoveringsInternational

Stinky

If you own a pet or haven’t cleaned in a while, you may notice a lingering smell on your carpet, but the odor should be gone or noticeably diminished after a proper cleaning. If it doesn’t, this means that the odor has penetrated deep into the carpet fibers, the carpet pad or the subfloor, and it may even indicate mold and mildew growth. In cases like these, it’s often more cost effective to replace the entire carpet completely in order to fully eliminate the odor or odors. Source: WFMYNews2
