3 Common Types of Carpet Cleaning Challenges

There are different kinds of carpet cleaning challenges that you might be facing one of this days. In this article, we’ll discuss 3 common carpet cleaning challenges, including:  pet stain and odor, soil retardants and baby mess.

Pet Stain and Odor

When a cat urinates on carpet or upholstery, it leaves both a stain and an odor. To fix both, clean the area as soon as possible to prevent it from soaking through to the backing and pad below and to avoid any permanent bleaching. Pet urine stains can have a permanent bleaching effect on some types of carpet, depending on how they are dyed. Disperse-dyed polyester, solution-dyed olefin, or solution-dyed nylon generally do not bleach under these conditions. Pet urine is more likely to have a bleaching effect on nylon carpets colored with acid dyes. Bleaching may not actually become apparent until the carpet is cleaned, at which point the carpet dyes previously released by the pet urine are removed. This is generally more visible in darker carpets. To avoid bleaching, address the problem as soon as possible. Source: Rugdoctor

Soil Retardants

Most carpets are now factory-treated with a coating that helps the carpet fibers shed water and spills. The key is cleaning up the spills quickly. Once a carpet is five years old or so, you may need to have it retreated, at least in the high traffic areas.

The easiest way to check whether carpet retreatment is necessary is to place a few drops of water on the carpet in the questionable areas and see whether the drops bead up or are absorbed quickly into the fibers. If they are absorbed, it’s time to retreat the carpet. Source: HomeAdvisor

5 Favorites: Modern Menorahs for Hanukkah (and More)

We're admiring the current crop of menorahs that are not only modern in form, but add a note of glamour, too. In time for the first day of Hanukkah next week (this year, it's December 7), here are five favorites:

Above: From San Francisco kitchen emporium March, the March Brass Menorah consists of nine individual candle holders and a matching tray made from silver plated polished brass, $2,500. The design is also available in Patinated Steel for $2,000 and Silver $3,200.

Above: The Menorah from architects Marmol Radziner is handmade in Los Angeles from walnut and bronze; $140.

Our frozen Winter Cart

We had a quick visit from a friend that might live along the fjords in Norway … or he might not. The story of him and his friends inspired our most recent project.

We started with a 2009 Yamaha Drive. This cart was originally lowered, and had a lot of upgrades, but it has seen some changes over the last few months. We added a DoubleTake Vortex body kit to it. Terri chose the color pearl … we like it!
The body kit comes pre-cut for head lights and tail lights, so we added a
standard light package. The cart already had the deluxe LED package with signals and brake light, so adding a few wires was easy, effectively doubling the light power!

The cart already looked great with the 12” alloy wheels and low profile tires, so no change was needed there, but it needed seating for four people. Adding a flip seat made sense. We added a DoubleTake Max 5 rear-facing seat that converts into a cargo bed. It also has access to the bagwell, which can be converted into a storage box, or ice bucket! Sweet!

Both the front and rear seat cushions are DoubleTake Extreme matching seats, and we chose white on white, which blends nicely with the pearl colored body.

We wanted the back seats to be fully covered by the roof … winter usually means rain in the Pacific Northwest … so an extended roof was the answer. Again, choosing the matching pearl colored roof made sense. This allows full coverage for the back seat passengers or cargo, and it also makes for a better fitting enclosure, which we will get to later!

Our visitor decided that this would be a lovely opportunity to decorate the cart. He brought some stickers that represent his friends, and we put them on the cart for him … his hands don’t work very well.

We wanted to add a drivable enclosure to the cart, but we wanted something that would match, and flow well with the cart, rather than detract from it. DoubleTake roofs come with a track system that allows installation of their custom colored enclosure panels and valances.

Each panel zips up separately, letting you have each area opened or closed, depending on your use. The valance is more than cosmetic, as it provides an area to roll up and hide each panel. It’s easy to roll up a panel and hide it in the valance, even rolling up the entire enclosure!

Best part is, this enclosure provides full protection for the back seat, and it has a zip-open window if the sun starts to peek out!

Ilse Crawford's London Flat Hits the Market

We're longtime admirers of Ilse Crawford's London flat, situated in the heart of Borough, which she designed in collaboration with Vincent Van Duysen and 6a Architects. Now it's for sale, and we're taking another look around (she's lived in the space for 15 years and it's evolved considerably over the years) and filing away ideas for the future. The pale gray/emerald green palette still looks fresh and there's an emphasis on comfort; a deep and engulfing sofa, a suite of mohair-upholstered Breuer dining chairs, and more clutter (in a good way) than you might expect.

Above: Large original sash windows run along the south side of the building. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases run the length of the room. A pair of green Vico Magistretti Gaudi Chairs for Artemide adds a dash of vibrant color.

Above: The living area is anchored by the Ilse Sofa, made by British company George Smith and upholstered in Maharam Extreme Mohair, was designed to feel like "a room within a room."
