Is there a fit with the Reds?

“The Reds have let teams know they are open for business,” the NY Post’s Joel Sherman wrote last week, which means potential trades for Aroldis Chapman, Jay Bruce, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips (Nov. 11, 2015).

Reds 3B Todd Frazier may also be available, though they’re not eager to deal him, rival executives told ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark (Nov. 16, 2015).

According to Stark, in deals for Frazier and Chapman, the Reds are seeking young, Major League-ready talent.

The Mets and Reds reportedly talked last summer, specifically about Jay Bruce and Zack Wheeler. I suppose Sandy Alderson might poke around on Bruce again, but that makes less sense with the emergence of Michael Conforto. I’d love to see Votto in blue and orange, but he’s due an astounding $199 million the next eight seasons, which is crazy. To deal him, the Reds will have to eat some of that money, which I’m sure they’d love to shed. Phillips is intriguing as well, since he’s an above-average fielder and experienced hitter under contract through 2017. Of course, he’s not close to the player he once was…

Similarly, while Frazier is a nice story (local guy from New Jersey, lots of power, etc.), he isn’t an exact fit for the Mets. He’s due an affordable $7.5 million next season, after which he’ll enter his final season of arbitration. However, he had a terrible second half and, while he could fill in for David Wright at third base, he’d have to also play the corner outfield, which would mean moving Curtis Granderson to center field. The Reds and their fans also LOVE Frazier, so I have no idea what that would do to his cost, especially since he’s under contract for two more years.

That said, again, these two teams talked this past summer, so they could continue those discussions this winter, especially since they have some parts and pieces that should intrigue one another…
