Mets 1B prospect Dom Smith returns from oblique injury

Mets 1B prospect Dominic Smith returned to action in the Arizona Fall League Tuesday after two weeks with an oblique injury.

Smith, 20, had two singles and left the game for a pinch runner in the eighth inning. He entered the night hitting .385 with a .519 OBP, one home run, four doubles and five RBIs through 12 games.

MLB.com recently ranked him the organization’s fifth-best prospect.

“He has excellent hand-eye coordination and an advanced approach at the plate,” MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo wrote in his report. “He hasn’t shown a ton of extra-base pop, but it started to show up more in his second full season. … The Mets feel the power will eventually come as Smith matures and that he’ll continue to move in that direction.”

In an on-air interview during Monday’s game, Smith said the Mets recently told me him not to focus on hitting home runs. Instead, they want him to keep hitting the ball hard and focus on using the entire field.
