Terry Collins and his coaches, and Sandy Alderson and his staff all met Tuesday at Citi Field to review the 2015 season, from what I can gather. The group discussed what worked, what didn’t, and where they need to improve to to get back to the World Series next season.
The GM Meetings will take place in Boca Raton, Florida, next week, Nov. 9 through Nov. 12. Typically, during the day, the group will spend more time discussing business issues about the game. In addition to conferences and meetings about league issues, the GM Meetings are used for teams to meet, talk about agendas, player values, offseason plans, learn who wants who and who may be available. So, buckle up, we’ll get hit with a lot of random trade rumors, which can be exciting and tedious.
In the past, November was used for research, with deals happening during or after the Winter Meetings in early December. However, the last two years, a bevy of activity went down during November, not long after the GM Meetings. I have a feeling we may see the same, especially in trades, as teams look to this market before having to overspend on free agents.
Alderson and Collins will address reporters today at Citi Field at 11 a.m. ET, which will air live on SNY. They’ll certainly discuss Collins’ new contract. I’m sure Alderson will also answer questions about his general off-season plan. This should mark the first sign of what he intends to do this winter.
My hunch is he’ll be vague, as usual. However, I hope to hear him discuss wanting to create a more balanced lineup, while strengthening the team’s defense. He’ll have more money to spend this winter than usual, but there aren’t a lot of areas that should require a pricey fix. Instead, I’d like to see him ignore the trade market and use his dollars to create a more well-rounded team around his pitching staff.
My goal today is to talk with people at Citi Field, listen to what everyone is saying, see what I can pick up and then write my ideal plan later in the week.
