Cespedes deal was worth it to Mets, even if he leaves as a free agent

The deal to acquire Yoenis Cespedes was worth the price in trade to the Mets, even if Cespedes leaves as a free agent and signs with another team, Sandy Alderson said Wednesday at Citi Field (Nov. 3, 2015).

Cespedes is a free agent this winter and reportedly seeking at least a six-year deal.

“We wouldn’t have gotten to the World Series without Cespedes,” he said. “So, from our standpoint, that was a price well paid.”

In July, the Mets sent pitching prospects Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa to the Tigers for Cespedes, who hit .287 with 17 home runs and 44 RBIs in 57 games with the Mets.

In September, Cespedes told the New York Post he was happy playing for the Mets, he loved how the fans received him and he would be very interested in staying with the organization (Sept. 16, 2015).

Cespedes could end up getting a deal worth between $125 million and $160 million, according to a Yahoo! Sports report (Sept. 14, 2015).
