Injury forces Dominic Smith to miss AFL’s Rising Stars Game

Mets prospect 1B Dominic Smith could miss the rest of the Arizona Fall League with a muscle strain, according to ESPN reporter Adam Rubin (Nov. 6, 2015).

Smith, 20, had been selected for the AFL Rising Stars Game. He was hitting .385 with one HR, five RBI and a .519 on-base percentage during 12 games this fall.

The Mets selected Smith with the 11th pick during the 2013 draft.

He was named the Florida State League player of the year this past season hitting .305 with six HR and 79 RBI in 456 at-bats.

Smith was recently named the organization’s second-best position prospect, according to Baseball America (Oct. 30, 2015).

This next season will be a big year for Smith, who is expected to open next season with Double-A Binghamton. He has not shown much power, which will be necessary for him to crack the big-league roster at first base. Sandy Alderson appears committed to Lucas Duda, so there is no rush for Smith. But, Dom is a superior defensive first baseman. He will have a chance at a Gold Glove, given the competition. He’s also a smart, intense players with a lot of confidence. But, he’s been playing in pitcher friendly environments. So, all eyes will be on him as he makes the adjustment to Binghamton. He should also probably get a week or two in big-league camp next spring, so the big-league squad can get a sense of what he’s about in advance of him graduating to Double-A.
