David Wright encouraged his teammates to return to the field last night to thank their fans before officially ending the 2015 season.
As soon as the field was clear of Kansas City’s celebration, Wright led his teammates out of the clubhouse, through the tunnel and back on to the field, where hundreds of fans stuck around to see their favorite players one last time.
The crowd started chanting, “Let’s go Mets,” and, “Thank you, Mets,” as players waved and saluted them for their support.
“I can’t tell you how many fans were screaming into our dugout, saying, ‘Thank you, thank you, for everything you’ve done for us this year,'” Wright explained. “They were so supportive, so appreciative, that’s why we had to go back out to salute them. Even though we lost that game, lost that series, to have that kind of support was incredible. … These guys over here, and this city and this fan base and this organization, turned the worst year that I’ve had into the most exciting, the most fun that I’ve ever had on a baseball field. And, I can’t thank them enough for that.”
Wright made a similar speech to his teammates just after the game ended, saying they should all be proud of what they accomplished and there is no shame in losing a World Series.
“I’ve done this for a long, long time, and this is the most fun I’ve ever had in all the years,” Terry Collins later added. “It was a tremendous season, all we had to deal with, tremendous guys to be around, great experience. I’m very, very proud of them.”

No, no, thank you, Mets. Seriously, as difficult as losing may be, there is no question that this was an incredible ride. Personally, I had more fun this season writing, thinking and talking about this team and going to games than I’ve had since the late ’90s. For me, this was more fun than 2006, because of the drama and excitement from goal post to goal post.
It’s actually difficult to think of everything that happened, as I sit here typing. From all the preseason hype to the 11-game winning streak and Take Back New York; from the long, hot summer, John Mayberry Jr. batting cleanup to the public demand for action; from the pressurized trade deadline, non-trade of Carlos Gomez, Wilmer Flores crying, the tarp coming off the field to Flores coming through in the clutch, all in one week; from Yoenis Cespedes‘s ungodly six-week stretch, which was like nothing I’ve ever seen before, to pummeling the Nationals; from Matt Harvey‘s pitch counts, innings limits, skipped starts and press conferences to winning the NL East, beating the Dodgers and Cubs and getting to the World Series. The World Series!
It’s amazin’. It really is, and that story and ride should not be glossed over, just because the Mets didn’t win the last few games of the year. I’m disappointed, but I’ll get over it. In its wake, I’m left with a lot of great memories, the opportunity to spend time being happy and celebrating with family and friends, reconnecting with people I haven’t talked to in years, and getting to see colleagues and friends I care about finally know what it feels like to win.
So, Mets, sincerely, thank you for 2015, and I can’t wait to get back again next season…
