Nationals and Marlins make managerial changes

The Marlins introduced Don Mattingly as their new manager on Monday.

Mattingly parted way with the Dodgers after again failing to make the World Series, despite the team’s payroll nearing $300 million. Miami has had seven managers since June 2010, but Mattingly hopes to give the position a level of consistency.

“I signed a four-year deal,” Mattingly said during a press conference this week. “I plan on being here at least 10.”

Meanwhile, the Nationals will name Dusty Baker their next manager after talks with Bud Black fell through, MLB.com’s William Ladson reports (Nov. 3).

Washington, which fired Matt Williams after the regular season, was expected to name Black its next manager five days ago, but, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman, the two sides never reached an agreement (Nov. 3).

Black had been fired as Padres manager this past June after they started the season 32-33.

Baker has not managed since 2013, when his Reds won 90 games in the regular season, but lost the Wild Card game to the Pirates. In three of his last four seasons in Cincinnati, Baker led the Reds to the playoffs three times, but never past the NLDS.
