Boras purchased insurance on Harvey’s arm

After the regular season ended, Scott Boras, who represents Matt Harvey, purchased insurance on Harvey’s arm, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (Oct. 19).

Heyman notes that it’s unclear how much the policy is for and says that it is “two-tiered,” with different payouts for Harvey struggling performance-wise or his career ending early due to injury.

In early September, Boras said Harvey’s surgeon had mandated a hard 180-inning cap for Harvey, but Boras told Heyman that he never mandated for the Mets to shut Harvey down.

“We were never about him not pitching in the postseason, and we never said Matt Harvey wasn’t going to pitch in the playoffs,” Boras said. “Any question revolved around the management of innings. There’s an obligation — I should say mandate — to pitch. There’s an obligation to the integrity of the game, to his teammates and the fans. At no time did the player or I ever say he wasn’t going to pitch in the postseason.”

“I understand Matt Harvey has to pitch,” Boras continued. “The only way not to is to have the team take the ball away from him. And I don’t think they’re doing it anytime soon.”

Harvey’s innings total for this season is now at 202 after he made one start in the NLDS and started Game 1 of the NLCS. He’s expected to pitch Game 5 of the NLCS (if necessary) on Thursday in Chicago.

To this point, Harvey has thrown the fifth-most innings ever for a pitcher who is in his first season back from Tommy John surgery.
