Cueto shuts down Mets with two-hit, complete-game

Royals RHP Johnny Cueto tossed a two-hitter against the Mets in Game 2 of the World Series, with both hits coming from Lucas Duda.

He, who is scheduled to start a possible Game 6 in Kansas City, struck out four and walked three.

“You saw it even in the last inning, still changing speeds, throwing strikes, using his changeup, pitching to both sides of the plate,” manager Terry Collins said after the game. “Very effective pitching in, all the windup, all the different deliveries, it throws your timing off.”

Cueto’s performance was the first complete game by an American League pitcher in the postseason since Minnesota’s Jack Morris won Game 7 against the Braves in 1991.

Tip your cap, he looked outstanding. He’s been consistently inconsistent the last four months. Last night, he was on his game. His two-seam fastball was slippery, cutting back in to the strike zone like a Wiffle hall. This, plus the ump having a big strike zone, made it impossible for the Mets to get anything going. They took some sick strikes. And, when they did swing, though they made contact, it was weak contact. Their two hits, both by Duda, were nothing but soft singles. In his next start, there’s a good chance he’ll be a disaster. However, last night he was great. He looked like his old self from the Reds and I’m not sure there was much the Mets could do to bust out against him. I’m thinking this is how the Cubs and Dodgers felt against the Mets…
