Keep calm and believe in deGrom

Jacob deGrom will look to get the Mets out of a one-game hole when he takes the mound for Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Kauffman Stadium.

“I’ve actually enjoyed pitching on the road in the postseason,” said deGrom, who pitched at Dodgers Stadium in the NLDS and Wrigley Field in the NLCS. “You go out there and you’re getting booed and it’s fun to try to silence the crowd.”

DeGrom is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three postseason starts.

He dominated Game 1 of the NLDS, labored through Game 5 and settled down after a rough first inning in Game 3 of the NLCS. However, despite having 27 strikeouts in 20 innings, he knows the Royals’ lineup may force deGrom to pitch backward instead of throwing fastballs.

“They’re going to battle you,” deGrom said of the Royals. “They’re not going to strike out a lot and they’re going to put the ball in play. I think my job is to keep the ball down. I always say I try to go out there and get early contact, and strikeouts just seem to happen. That’s going to be my same game plan going into this.”

Thankfully, deGrom is on the hill tonight. He’s exactly who this team needs right now. He’s not just their best pitcher, but he’s also light hearted, relaxed, focused, had nothing to do with Game 1, and he’s able to grind his way through a start, which will be more important than usual given how hard the bullpen was used on Tuesday night. He’s the perfect fit.
