Tonight’s Pitching Matchup

Jacob deGrom: DeGrom is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his three postseason starts this season. In the NLDS against the Dodgers, deGrom led the Mets on the mound by winning Game 1, against Clayton Kershaw, and Game 5, against Zack Greinke. After struggling in the first inning of Game 3 in the NLCS against the Cubs, deGrom settled in to throw seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits. All three of his postseason outings have come on the road. In 20 innings pitched this postseason, deGrom has recorded 27 strikeouts.

Johnny Cueto: Cueto’s results in the postseason have been much like his regular season, some ups and downs. In Game 2 of the ALDS against Houston, he surrendered four runs over six innings. However, in Game 5, Cueto threw a gem, allowing two runs over eight innings in route to closing out the Astros. Cueto’s roller coaster postseason continued in Game 3 of the ALCS against Toronto. The Blue Jays knocked him out after only two innings after he was roughed up for eight runs. In 11 career starts against New York, Cueto has a 4.02 ERA.

Team Notes

Mets Notes: With last night’s loss, the Mets are now 0-5 all-time in Game 1 of the World Series. This is the first time the Mets have trailed in a series this postseason. Jeurys Familia allowed his first run and blew his first save opportunity of the postseason last night. The run allowed by Familia was the only earned run allowed by the Mets bullpen over 7 + innings of relief. After entering the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning, Juan Lagares was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. David Wright is 6-for-25 off Cueto in his career while Travis d’Arnaud is 3-for-5 with two doubles.

Royals Notes: The Royals won game 1 of the World Series for the first time in franchise history. Alcides Escobar led off the game for the Royals last night with an inside the park home run. Alex Gordon hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to tie the game up and keep the Royals alive. Ben Zobrist was 3-for-6 with two doubles. Chris Yong, who is slated to start Game 4, threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
