Royals OF Alex Gordon hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning of Game 1, after which the Mets bats have gone silent. To get back in to this series, they’re obviously going to need to do better.
“We came into the series swinging the bat fairly well,” David Wright said after the game. “I thought we had some hard-hit balls; just seemed like they played us perfectly. We drew some walks, which was good. There were one or two times where we had opportunities to score runs and that was it.”
The Mets are batting .165 through two games in the World Series, while getting just six hits in their last 51 at bats.
“We’re not hitting. That’s what I see,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “We’ve stressed it enough, when we play good our lineup produces throughout. It just shows you right now with us not hitting how big Dan Murphy really was in the NLCS with the home runs.”
Murphy, who drew two walks in Game 2, is 2 for 9 in the World Series.
“He really hasn’t gotten too many pitches to hit,” Mets hitting coach Kevin Long said. “Pitches are off the plate, pitches are low, pitches are high. I think he’s doing what he needs to do. I think he can tell you that he’s taking what they’re giving him, and they haven’t given him a whole lot.”
It’s not just Murphy, though. Yoenis Cespedes is 6-for-32 with no home runs during the last week. He’s getting murdered by inside pitches, whether fastballs or off speed. Michael Conforto is 0-for-19 since his home run against Zack Greinke in the NLDS, as he’s uncharacteristically swinging and missing at a ton of pitches outside the strike zone. Wilmer Flores has just five hits since taking over for Ruben Tejada in the NLDS. Frankly, his inability to hit anything other than a single dates back to the end of September. And, I have no idea what’s going on with David Wright, who is not driving the ball at all.
“I don’t really feel like we’re too far off,” Long concluded. “Johnny Cueto threw a good game. We swung at six pitches out of the zone, which isn’t many. There was some quality to a lot of those at-bats.”
I’m not in a panic. Edinson Volquez and Cueto did a nice job. They look like a team getting beat, not making stupid mistakes against weak throwers. I’m very confident that going to Citi Field, facing two lesser starting pitchers, at home, with the crowd, in an environment they’re familiar with, will reignite the Mets.
