Murphy homers in fourth straight game

Daniel Murphy continued his torrid postseason by going 2-for-3 and homering in his fourth straight game during Game 2 of the NLCS.

“He’s about as locked in as I’ve seen a hitter and he’s carried that out now for seven games,” David Wright said. “That’s quite a feat, especially in the playoffs against this pitching.”

Murphy got ahead of the count 2-0 before fouling a pitch off Jake Arrieta deep down the right-field line, but well foul. On the next pitch, he pulled a 93 mph fastball that snuck inside the foul pole to give the Mets a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Murphy tied Mike Piazza’s franchise record for career postseason home runs with five. In fact, Murphy had never gone a calendar month in his career with five home runs.

“I think I got a cutter that I pulled foul, a heater away that I didn’t go on, it was close, then a breaking ball that I was just able to keep fair,” Murphy said.

In his next at-bat, Arrieta intentionally walked Murphy to bring up Cespedes, who hit an infield single to drive in a run.

“Ces hit 35 bombs this year,” Murphy said of the free pass. “I was surprised.”

There is really nothing else to say at this point, other than he’s “Murphalicious,” as Collins said in April. This postseason performance is mind-boggling. There will be plenty of time to discuss hot stove baseball, free agents, trades, etc., and right now life is about enjoying this postseason and an amazing October. However, I think it’s fair to wonder what how Murphy’s recent hot streak will impact his free agency. He entered this postseason already a fan favorite. Now, he’s entering folk hero status. And, if the Mets keep winning because Murphy’s significance gets them where Mets fans want them to go, his reputation among Mets fans will land himself in the land of Keith Hernandez, Mike Piazza, Gary Carter, etc. And, I don’t know how Sandy Alderson and company will be allowed to turn their backs on him at that point… It’s going to be very, very interesting to watch play out.
