Tonight’s Pitching Matchup

Noah Syndergaard: Made his first career relief appearance in Game 5 of the NLDS Thursday in LA. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two and walking one to earn a hold. Before that, he took the loss in Game 2 at Dodger Stadium. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out nine with four walks in a 5-2 defeat. The nine Ks tied Jon Matlack (1973 NLCS Game 2) for the second-most in a pitcher’s first career postseason game in team history. Jacob deGrom had 13 in his debut in NLDS Game 1. . Including his NLDS start, Syndergaard has struck out at least eight batters in each of his last five starts, tied for the ninth-longest streak in franchise history. . .Syndergaard finished the season 7-2 with a 2.46 ERA in 12 starts at Citi Field. Opposing batters are hitting .130 with RISP against Syndergaard in Queens, compared to .300 on the road.

Jake Arrieta:  Lone road loss was in May at St. Louis and has won 13 in a row  since. Including the postseason, Arrieta (2-0, 2.45) has compiled a 0.83 ERA over 15 overall starts since losing to Philadelphia on July 25. The righthander has also been outstanding on the road, going 12-0 with a 1.18 ERA in 16 starts since a loss at St. Louis on May 7. . .On July 2, he allowed one run and struck out seven in eight innings of a 6-1 win in Queens. He’s 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA in his past four overall meetings with the Mets since losing his first in 2012 with Baltimore.

Team Notes

Mets Notes:  Daniel Murphy has homered in three straight postseason games. The only other Met to hit a home run in three consecutive postseason games was Donn Clendenon in the 1969 World Series against Baltimore…Murphy has four postseason home runs, tied for the second-most in team history in the postseason…Only Mike Piazza has more (five)…Murphy became the second player in club history to hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning or later in a winner-take-all game (Game 5 at LA). Ray Knight in Game 7 of the 1986 World Series was the other. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Murphy became the first player to hit three home runs in one postseason off pitchers with at least 15 wins and an ERA under 2.50 during the regular season…  Jeurys Familia allowed only one hit and one walk in 6.2 scoreless innings this postseason…Familia’s three saves are tied for the most in Mets postseason history…He recorded his third save of four or more outs in Game 1 of the NLCS.

Cubs Notes:  Snyndergaard his facing Kyle Schwarber for the first time. The rookie slugger is hitting .471 with six RBI in six games and his four homers tie a Cubs postseason record shared by Alex Gonzalez and Aramis Ramirez in 2003. Schwarber is trying to join Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria (2008) as the only rookies to hit homers in four straight playoff games. ..
