Omar Minaya was on WFAN today, talked Mets prospects and had the following to say about…

1) He loves what he’s seeing from Daniel Murphy, who Minaya drafted in 2006 because they liked his intensity, he never gives up an at bat and they thought he had a chance to win a batting title.

2) Matt Harvey had incredible tools, but Minaya’s staff loved how tough and how strong of a competitor he was, showing an attack mentality similar to Roger Clemens.

3) Minaya’s scouts deserve a lot of credit for selecting Jacob deGrom, who they liked as a pitcher, even though he was drafted a shortstop, “He’s a competitor too.”

4) Jeurys Familia is a great story, who they only saw once in the Dominican Republic, when he was throwing 91-92 mph at 17-years-old, but with almost the same sink that he’s showing now in the big leagues.

5) He was surprised and impressed when, with the Padres, he heard rumors that Sandy Alderson was about to acquire Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud for R.A. Dickey, who is a pitcher he first brought to the Mets while still GM.

6) It isn’t bittersweet seeing these young players be successful, while he isn’t the GM, “I’m always happy for the player, especially when they succeed, you’re happy as a group. I’m happy for the organization and the players.”
