Speed and power propel Mets to Fall Classic

The Mets stole seven bases in the four-game NL Championship Series, three more than they had as a team during the final month of the season. The team stole third base five times all season, but has done it six times this postseason.

“We came in knowing that we had to be a little aggressive on the bases, something we don’t normally do,” manager Terry Collins said after the his team’s Game 3 win. “We’re not that kind of a team, but we told the guys, ‘Look, if you get on and you think you can go, go.'”

Meanwhile, Daniel Murphy homered each game of the NLCS. In Game 4, Lucas Duda and Travis d’Arnaud hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning as the Mets jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

“It’s the postseason and you expect to get great pitching,” said Duda, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles in Game 4. “It didn’t seem to affect Daniel Murphy too much. It’s nice to contribute.”

It’s easy to talk about the pitching, which has been sensational. I mean, any time you run four outstanding starting pitchers, coupled with a lights-out closer, a team is going to go far in October. However, the team’s hitters and base runners have been doing an equally impressive job, especially considering they’ve faced Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Jon Lester and Jake Arietta in six of their last nine games. Yet, they’re hitting for power, stealing bases, hitting behind guys, moving runners over and doing everything from small ball to power. The Mets are not a one-trick pony. They’re shown over the last week, and, frankly, the last three months, they can beat a team in a variety of ways…
