Yoenis Cespedes went 3-for-5 with two RBI and had a critical stolen base before scoring the go-ahead run during Game 3 of the NLCS.
Cespedes led off the sixth inning with a single, advanced to second base on a sacrifice and then stole third base with one out.
“My thinking was just, I was confident, I would make it, and with just one out I just felt like I knew I could put us ahead,” Cespedes said after the game.
Travis d’Arnaud then grounded out. Michael Conforto then struck out on a wild pitch, which should have ended the inning, but the ball reached the backstop as Conforto was safe at first base, which allowed Cespedes to score and make it a 3-2 game.
“I was preparing myself for the ball to hit the dirt,” Cespedes said. “It happened one other time before, but I wasn’t able to go. So, in my mind I was trying to be prepared for anything that could happen.”
Cespedes had been in a 2-for-16 slump before Game 3. He drove in David Wright with an RBI double in the gap in the first inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead, then drove Wright in again with an RBI single in the seventh inning that made it 4-2.
“I just put some work in the batting cages every day,” Cespedes said. “I have exercises that I go to in case I’m having a rough time, that’s kind of what helps me get through and out of them.”
