Daniel Murphy homered for the fifth straight playoff game to power the Mets to a 5-2 win over the Cubs in Game 3 of the NLCS on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.
“I wish I could explain it,” Murphy said when asked why he’s hitting for such incredible power this postseason. “If I knew, I would have done it six years ago.”
Murphy joins Carlos Beltran as the only players to homer in five straight playoff games.
“We were talking in the dugout and being here in Chicago he should have given the shoulder shrug like Jordan after that last one,” David Wright said. “It’s fun to watch.”
Murphy had never hit more than five home runs in a single month in his regular-season career, but has hit six home runs – a new franchise record – in eight postseason games during the past week and a half.
“I don’t think I’ve seen anybody put on this kind of a show on this stage like he has so far,” manager Terry Collins said.
Here’s more on Murphy, courtesy of the team’s postgame notes…
Home Runs: Prior to Murphy this season, the previous team record for homers in a single postseason was four, held by Carlos Delgado in 2006, Mike Piazza in 2000 and Rusty Staub in 1973. … Murphy’s six home runs are tied for the seventh-most in postseason history and the most since Nelson Cruz tied the Major League record with eight home runs during the 2011 postseason for the Rangers. … Murphy’s six home runs are tied for the second-most ever in a player’s first eight career postseason games (and the most by a Met), trailing only Carlos Beltran (7). … His home run total is the most by a Major Leaguer this postseason.
RBI: Murphy has now logged an RBI in seven of New York’s eight postseason games this season (nine RBIs total), including at least one in each of the last six contests, a new franchise record. His six-game postseason RBI streak is tied for the sixth-longest in MLB history and the longest since Pedro Alvarez also had a six-game streak for the Pirates in 2013.
