Don’t get cocky, Mets, keep your foot on the gas

It’s hard to imagine, with the Mets starting pitching and Jeurys Familia, and two of the next four games in Citi Field, that they lose four in a row. Of course, crazier things have happened, just ask the Yankees. But, these sort of losing streaks become so much more difficult when throwing an ace or No. 2 starter on the hill every night.

That said, David Wright is right, this is no time for letting up…

““I think we’ll feel better after another win, that’s for sure,” Wright said following Tuesday’s win. “I think the last thing we could start doing is thinking beyond [Game 4]. [Wednesday]’s the most important game and hopefully we can close it out.”

According to Wright, Terry Collins is pushing the mantra that, regardless of where they are in the series, every game is a must win.

“Once you get ahead of a team, I think you have to continue to put your foot on the gas,” he concluded.

I love this statement. The best part is that it was in response to a string of questions from reporters hyping the Mets and asking if he, Jacob deGrom and Daniel Murphy were excited to be so close to the World Series.

“This is an excellent team,” Wright said, getting serious and pointing back to the field, referring to the Cubs. “If you give them room to win a game or streak along a couple good innings, they’re going to get all the confidence in the world and expect to beat us three in a row. So, it’s as simple as that.”

This is why he’s the team’s captain, and I hope his team is listening…

“Trust me, it’s been done before,” Cubs president Theo Epstein said late Tuesday, hinting at his time when leading the Red Sox, who overcame a 0-3 deficit to defeat the Yankees in 2004, on their way to their first World Championship since 1918.

In 2015, the Cubs had nine different four-game winning streaks.

There’s confidence in this clubhouse,” Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo added. “We just gotta keep playing baseball. One New York team has blown a 3-0 lead, let’s make it the other New York team.”
