The Mets had a clear advantage in pitching and all of the momentum coming off two big wins entering last night’s Game 3. However, being a Mets fan, and much experienced in disappointment, I dug deep and still found a lot to be nervous about, such as a stadium that hasn’t been kind to the Mets in recent years; a pitcher with less than great numbers against the Cubs; and an opposing lineup just begging for a breakout game.
But, the Mets Magic lived another night and they jumped out to a commanding 3-0 series lead. All the pieces were working last night. They got six strong innings (following one poor one) from Jacob deGrom, timely hits and base running from up and down the lineup, and – of course – another Murphy home run. I’m running out of things to say about him at this point. He’s as locked in as I’ve ever seen anyone and he’s done it against some of the best pitching in the game.
The story is beginning to form that the Mets are the beneficiaries of lucky breaks (nevermind that they literally lost a run to a force of nature last night). It’s true that defensive miscues and poor baseball fundamentals on the part of the Cubs have played a big part, but equally true is that the Mets are playing as cleanly as they have all year. Perfectly timed stolen bases, solid defense, and working counts have been the keys to their victories. That’s not luck, it’s skill, and a skill the Cubs haven’t yet displayed.
As an overly cautious Mets fan, I’m not pouring the champagne just yet. But, I am putting it in the refrigerator to chill. The Mets need five more victories in 11 remaining games to come out on top and they’re showing they have everything it takes to get there.
