Report: Mets leaning toward offering Murphy a qualifying offer

The Mets are leaning toward extending Daniel Murphy a one-year qualifying offer, a source told the Bergen Record’s Tara Sullivan, although no final decision has been made (Oct. 23).

Murphy, who has hit seven home runs in nine postseason games, including the last six in a row, is set to become a free agent this offseason.

“We’re going to take it the same way we make all other decisions,” Mets assistant GM John Ricco told Sullivan.

The qualifying offer for Murphy would be a one-year, $15.8 million deal. If Murphy accepts it, he remains a Met; if he declines it, the Mets would receive a compensation pick in the 2016 MLB Draft if he signs a multi-year deal. No player has yet to accept a qualifying offer.

Asked what he thinks his value is for the offseason after Game 4 of the NLCS, Murphy said, “That’s an off-season question.”
