The Mets have been thinking about this for a year

The Mets had always believed they could win the World Series in 2015, even dating as far back as last year.

In September, 2014, Matt Harvey, who was still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, told manager Terry Collins the Mets would get to the World Series in 2015.

“He doesn’t lie to me,” Collins said that day, after relaying the Harvey story to reporters (Sept. 29. 2014).

That November, Collins took those words to heart when he discussed the team’s offseason plans.

“2015 is gonna be the year,” Collins said (Nov. 13, 2014). “We’re gonna be in the mix to play in October.”

Collins added that Harvey’s return, the acquisition of Michael Cuddyer and the growth of Wilmer Flores should have been considered significant acquisitions.

“We’re gonna be a different team,” Collins said, after which several of his players continued to beat a similar drum throughout the winter and into spring training.

“People kind of giggled at us and laughed at us when we proclaimed we were going to be a playoff team,” David Wright said Thursday, speaking about their pre-season confidence. “I hate to use that cliché, but it feels really good because we knew we had a good team in spring training and backed it up.”
