There was only one thing missing from the Mets wild victory last week in Game 3 of the NLDS and that was the dominant Matt Harvey. Well, he showed up last night in Game 1 of the NLCS and it was awesome.
He seemingly fed off the cheers of the crowd, who were chanting his name and roaring at every strike three. And there were many strike threes as he zipped through the Chicago’s formidable lineup. Were it not for a misplay by Juan Lagares (a concerning and ever-increasing trend), he would have brought a shutout into the eighth inning. His night was ended by a monstrous, 465-foot home run by Kyle Schwarber in to Chicago’s bullpen. It was so impressive, it was hard to even be mad. Even Harvey, a fighter to the end, didn’t look especially perturbed as he walked to the dugout to a thundering ovation.
His replacement, Jeurys Familia, showed the first cracks to his commanding postseason presence, but still held the Cubs scoreless in a four-out save punctuated by a defensive gem by – none other than – Daniel Murphy. 2015 continues to be the Year of the Murph as he opened the scoring by clobbering a homer off the front of the Pepsi Porch. Fans went nuts, screaming his name, even more so when he swiped a base later in the game. And he sent us home happy with a diving play to end it, racking up yet another memorable night in his quest for what may turn out to be the greatest playoff performance in postseason history.
Other Mets shined last night as well, from Travis d’Arnaud‘s shot off the home run apple, to Yeonis Cespedes‘s perfect throw home, to Curtis Granderson‘s continuing (and inexplicable) mashing of left-handed pitching. But as we huddled in the 30-degree chill at Citi Field, fans knew we were there for Harvey, our bulldog ace, who seemingly had been waiting his whole life for this game. And he was up to the challenge in every way…
