Five things we learned from Terry Collins’ press conference

Manager Terry Collins spoke to the media at a press conference on Saturday in advance of the World Series. Here are five things we learned from Collins:

1.) By having Matt Harvey start Game 1, Jacob deGrom pitch Game 2 and Noah Syndergaard start Game 3, deGrom benefits from an extra day of rest and Syndergaard is able to pitch at home, where he had a 2.46 ERA in the regular season.

2.) Despite the fact the Royals are among the top hitting teams against fastballs, Collins said that will not deter the way his pitchers go about their outings. “We’ve still gotta pitch to our strengths, and our strength is power,” Collins said.

3.) Collins has not looked at the matchups yet to determine which player(s) will serve as the designated hitter when the Mets play in Kansas City for Games 1 and 2, and if necessary Games 6 and 7.

4.) One of the biggest challenges the Mets will face will come defensively, trying to position everyone in the right spots at Kauffman Stadium. “We’ve got to do a real good job in that ballpark,” Collins said.

5.) Collins received a phone call from Dodgers legend Don Newcombe about how to approach the World Series. “I’m going in pretty excited after that phone call,” Collins said.
