The Cubs and Mets were never close to a trade

Last week, Mets GM Sandy Alderson and Cubs president Theo Epstein each told reporters that their organizations never had substantive talks about a deal swapping Chicago hitting for New York pitching, despite countless rumors to suggest otherwise.

In the last two years, multiple reports have indicated each side scouting the other, specifically mentioning Cubs shortstops Addison Russell and Starlin Castro and Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard. However, follow up reports citing team insiders repeatedly stated it was unlikely the two sides would ever see eye to eye on a deal.

In August, 2014, Toby Hyde and Rob Brender dedicated an episode of Mostly Mets to examining a possible trade between the Mets and Cubs, while talking with Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune about Chicago’s path to rebuilding their franchise. Later in the show, Triple-A Iowa Cubs broadcaster Randy Wehofer called in to talk about several Cubs hitting prospects, many of whom will be on field tonight during the NLCS…
