Who is Kyle Hendricks?

The Cubs will start 25-year-old RHP Kyle Hendricks in Game 3 of the NLCS tonight against the Mets at Wrigley Field.

In 32 starts this season, which was his first full season in the big leagues, Hendricks was 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA over 180 innings.

“These are the starts you want,” Hendricks said on Monday. “It’s a big opportunity for me, but I’ve got to remain calm, keep the ball down and make good pitches.”

In the NLDS, with the Cubs down in the series, Hendricks gave up three solo home runs in 4 2/3 innings, but took a no-decision as the Cubs rallied to win and eventually advance to the NLCS.

He is really, really successful when throwing his change-up to right-handed hitters. This is going to be a challenge for the Mets, who typically struggle with these sort of fastball-changeup guys. He’s basically trying to be a right-handed Tom Glavine. In the end, expect to see a lot of pitches away, and a lot swings, misses and weak contact. However, if he’s off, or not getting that outside strike from the umpire, like Glavine, he becomes very hittable. Hendricks is not great against left-handed hitters, so I’m looking to Daniel Murphy, Michael Conforto and especially Lucas Duda to wait for their pitch and use the warm weather and wind to their advantage.
