In talking with people around baseball, it sounds like John Ricco, Paul DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi did more listening than talking when meeting with agents and executives from dozens of MLB teams during this week’s GM meetings in Florida.
“They’re getting their ducks in a row, which is typical in November for postseason teams,” a rival insider told me of Sandy Alderson’s representatives.
Alderson did not attend the annual GM meetings to undergo an unspecified medical procedure.
“With Sandy not being here, the goal was to make sure we touched base with various clubs and agents that we thought might fit what we’re looking for,” Ricco told reporters, before heading to the airport. “We were able to get a pretty clear idea on some clubs — on some other clubs, not so clear — what they’re looking to do. And, also, we met with agents for the key players we think might be fits. So we head back. We’ll regroup with Sandy in New York and further define our plan for the offseason.”
It sounds to me like teams that met with the Mets are leaving Florida with four main take-aways:
- The Mets have no intention of trading away a big pitcher.
- They’re underselling an obvious desire to upgrade at SS.
- They’re not comfortable with the back-end of their bullpen.
- They’re going to acquire an experienced center fielder.
I also think they might non-tender Ruben Tejada and trade Juan Lagares to help raise money for any off-season acquisitions, though that only totals to around $5 million for 2016.
In either case, I am not expecting a big off season after what I’ve been hearing from people outside of the organization. My hunch is we’re looking at around $15-to-$20 million worth of additions, a new centerfielder and shortstop, a utility guy and some journeymen relievers to compete for spots in the bullpen. I’ll work on names and predictions and my own ideas for later in the day or early next week…
