Rockies are again shopping OF Carlos Gonzalez

The Rockies are again shopping OF Carlos Gonzalez, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman (Nov. 12, 2015).

“He’ll be thrilled” about a potential deal to a new team, a source close to Gonzalez told Heyman.

The Mets were not interested in acquiring him last July, people close to the Rockies told me at the time. I can only assume Colorado’s asking price was high, since they had been telling teams they were looking to acquire a player under contract the following season.

The Mets and Rockies had a series of conversations about Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and other players before Colorado fired GM Dan O’Dowd in October, 2014. The way I understand it, there wasn’t been a ton of dialogue between Sandy Alderson’s staff and Colorado’s new front office, and it actually got a bit awkward last summer with the way things went down with Tulowitzki going to the Blue Jays. So, I have no idea where things stand today…

That said, Gonzalez is due just $37 million through 2017. He’s appropriately valued if he puts up numbers like he did in 2015, when hit .271 with a .336 OBP and 40 HR. The thing is, he hit just .243 on the road with only a third of his home runs coming away from Coors Field. That is a major concern, since a) he has a history of injury, and b) you don’t get a discount on his salary during road games.

I’d reach out to the Rockies, because he’s a good hitter. I’d want Colorado to pick up a portion of his salary, and I hang up the phone if asked for a big-league starting pitcher or Michael Conforto. Gonzalez is good, but he’s not that good, especially if acquiring him means moving Curtis Granderson to center field.
