Matt Harvey’s arbitration projection for 2016

The Mets will have 11 players eligible for salary arbitration this offseason, including Matt Harvey.

MLB Trade Rumors projects Harvey, who earned $614,625 this past season and won’t be eligible for free agency until 2019, will earn $4.7 million through arbitration next year (Oct. 6, 2015).

Similarly, the award-winning team at Pace Law School determined that Harvey can expect to earn slightly less, $4.25 million, because of his injury history and lack of innings at this stage of his career (Nov. 16, 2015).

Last week, Harvey told FoxSports.com that he has no intention of leaving his agent, Scott Boras (Nov. 9, 2015), despite speculation in baseball that he pursue a different agency.

I realize there are lots of fans and media who believe he and the Mets should get together on a contract extension, something like five years and $55 million. However, because of his goals and agent, it’s fairly obvious that will never happen. This duo is 100 percent locked in on testing the free agent market the first moment he’s eligible three years from now. And, I don’t blame him.

I mean, to take a five-year deal now would mean he’d have to first test the market at 31 years old. Sure, he’d guarantee himself the money between now and then, which is nice. But, he’s already had Tommy John surgery and missed a full season because of it, so he’s probably pretty confident that his best has yet to come. It’s a gamble either way, but I can’t see him selling himself for anything less than top dollar, regardless of the risk. It’s just not his style…
