Daniel Murphy rejected the Mets’ $15.8 million one-year qualifying offer, but the Mets are expected to make a “legitimate” attempt to re-sign him, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports (Nov. 18).
According to Rubin, the Mets believe that Murphy might return to the Mets even if the team isn’t the highest bidder, due to the fact that Murphy enjoyed his time with the organization and in New York.
While Murphy rejected the Mets’ qualifying offer, the team can negotiate a new deal with him if they so choose.
If Murphy signs elsewhere, the Mets will receive a compensatory draft pick between the first and second round of the 2016 Amateur Draft.
MLB Trade Rumors has predicted that Murphy will ultimately sign a four-year deal worth $56 million.
Murphy, 30, hit .281 with a .322 OBP and .449 SLG to go along with 14 HR and 73 RBI during the regular season in 2015.
In the postseason, Murphy hit home runs in six consecutive games to help propel the Mets to a World Series berth.
