The Mets won their second World Series on Oct. 27, 1986, exactly 29 years ago today, defeating the Boston Red Sox in seven games.
The Mets second baseman at the time, Tim Teufel, is now the third base coach for the Mets team taking the field tonight against the Royals in the 2015 World Series.
Game 6 in 1986 was originally scheduled for Sunday night, October 26. However, heavy rain pushed the game to Monday night, October 27. Ron Darling, pitching on extra rest, was pulled in the fourth inning with two outs and a runner in scoring position. Sid Fernandez came in and, after walking Wade Boggs, was able to retire Marty Barrett on a fly ball to right field. Fernandez then retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth inning.
New York’s bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth, trailing 3-0. Pinch hitter Lee Mazzilli and Mookie Wilson picked up back to back hits and Teufel drew a walk to load the bases. Keith Hernandez singled to drive in Mazzilli and Wilson, and Gary Carter followed with a line drive to right field. Pinch runner Wally Backman, who came in to run for Teufel, scored the tying run.
Later in the game, Lenny Dykstra pinch hit for Kevin Mitchell and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Rafael Santana. With a three run lead, Mets reliever Jesse Orosco faced the top of Boston’s order and eventually struck out Marty Barrett to end the game and the series.
Teufel recently told reporters that he would love to see his current Mets win a ring, and take the baton from his 1986 teammates (Oct. 22, 2015).
“There’s another generation of Mets fans that will never forget 2015 if they do it,” Teufel said. “It will push the organization into a new direction, a new era. It would be wonderful.”
Today is also Jon Niese‘s birthday. He was born the same day the Mets won the World Series in ’86.
