Matt Harey‘s agent, Scott Boras, now believes the Mets appropriately handled his client’s innings limit, even though he pitched 216 as opposed to the doctor-recommended 180, he told reporters at the GM Meetings in Florida (Nov. 11, 2015).
In the beginning of September, as Harvey passed 160 innings pitched in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, Boras publicly criticized the Mets and reportedly told them to shut down Harvey after 180 innings to preserve his arm for future seasons rather than their playoff push.
Boras, Harvey, team doctors and Sandy Alderson talked by phone to devise a plan handling Harvey the rest of the season.
“The Mets came out with a very good plan for that after discussion,” Boras explained Wednesday. “The doctor agreed with it. It allowed Matt really long periods of rest in September, and, frankly, it allowed him to perform at probably his best levels because – instead of throwing 250 inning – he threw 210.”
Harvey pitched just three times during the last three and a half weeks of the regular season. In the playoffs, the Mets aligned him to start once in the NLDS, once in the NLCS and twice in the World Series. He went 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA in the playoffs, striking out 27 batters in 26 2/3 innings.
“Well, obviously the Mets have a pennant at the end of their aisle,” Boras said. “That kind of allows them to go where they want to go. I’m sure that with where they’re at, where they’re headed, having a core of pitching like they do, they have an opportunity to fill many holes and be a very competitive team for a long time.”
