Jeurys Familia blew his third save of the World Series when he allowed the game-tying run to score in the ninth inning of Game 5, as his defense let him down for the second straight night.
“That’s why you’ve got to play nine innings,” manager Terry Collins said. “You say you had them, you never have them until the 27th out is made. We played very well. We pitched very well. We’re real disappointed.”
Familia, who hadn’t blown a save from July 30 until the World Series, relieved Matt Harvey, who started the ninth but allowed a walk and double. Familia entered with Eric Hosmer, the game-tying run, on second base with nobody out in a 2-1 game.
“When the double hit, that’s when I said, ‘I’ve got to see if we can get out of this with only one run,'” Collins said.
Familia induced a groundout, which moved Hosmer to third with one out. Then, Salvador Perez hit a grounder to David Wright into a drawn-in infield. Wright looked Hosmer back and threw to first, when Hosmer took off. Lucas Duda caught it, but his throw sailed wide over Travis d’Arnaud’s head on the opposite side of the plate, which allowed Hosmer to score the tying run.
“A good throw, he’s out,” Collins said. “Luke’s got a great arm, and threw the ball wide.”
Duda agreed, and said there was no excuse for the mistake.
